10 Larnaca Attractions You Won't Want to Miss

1. Visit Agios Lazaros

Located in the heart of Larnaca lies the impressive Agios Lazaros Church. The stone building was built in the 9th century by Emperor Leo VI and was restored in the 17th century.

According to local legend, after Lazarus was resurrected, he moved to Larnaca and served as the Bishop of Kition for 30 years. His tomb rests beneath the sanctuary of the Church of Agios Lazaros, a remarkable place where you can explore both captivating history and stunning architecture.

2. Dive the Zenobia Wreck

In 1980, the ferry MS Zenobia capsized and sank near the shores of Larnaca. Today, it stands as one of the top scuba diving destinations in the world, drawing divers from all over to explore its fascinating wreck.

The wreck offers dive explorations suitable for all levels of divers. Newly PADI-certified divers can explore the starboard side of the ship, while more experienced divers have the opportunity to venture deeper into the ship’s interior. The Zenobia wreck is the perfect Larnaca excursion for those seeking some thrill and adventure on their Cyprus holiday!

3. Enjoy the Beaches

Another top thing to do in Larnaca is explore its stunning beaches! Foinikoudes Beach is the main stretch of sand along the eastern coast, beloved by both tourists and locals. Here, you can enjoy crystal-clear waters and a vibrant selection of restaurants and cafés right by the beach.

Mackenzie Beach is just 2km south of the centre of Larnaca, and is a firm favourite for families wanting to relax and enjoy the Cyprus sun. The waters at Mackenzie Beach are typically calm due to its sheltered location, and the beach offers a wide range of facilities, including comfortable sunbeds and exciting water sports activities.

4. Experience Larnaca Fort

At the edge of Larnaca’s beautiful seaside promenade, you’ll find the impressive Larnaca Fort. Built in 1625, this historic fort was the Ottomans' main defence for the city and was constructed on the site of an earlier medieval fortress, of which nothing remains.

Today, the fort houses Larnaca’s small Medieval Museum, which features a modest collection of weaponry and a selection of fascinating black-and-white photographs showcasing the local area.

5. View Larnaca Salt Lake

Larnaca Salt Lake is another top thing to do in Larnaca, where you can often see pink flamingos enjoying the shallow waters. In the summertime, the lakebed dries up, allowing you to walk across it. Stroll along the pleasant hiking trail that circles the lake and soak in the lovely views. There are picnic tables where you can sit back and relax, but don’t forget to bring your own snacks and drinks, as there are no shops around.

6. Explore Scala

The old Turkish Quarter, also known as Skala, is a must-visit destination in Larnaca. After the Turkish community was moved to the north, this once-neglected district has started to come back to life. The district retains much of its traditional character, with old-fashioned architecture and a range of quaint pottery shops, perfect for a day-out!

7. Walk Down Larnaca Marina

Beyond the palm trees and quaint cafés that decorate the Finikoudes area lie the impressive yachts of Larnaca Marina. Situated in the heart of the city, just north of the promenade at Finikoudes Beach, the marina is an ideal spot for a romantic evening stroll.

Here, you can watch a variety of vessels embarking on trips to the Zenobia Wreck. Additionally, you'll have the chance to dine at one of the many restaurants serving delicious local specialities, including calamari, sea bass, and octopus. Take a look at our guide on the best food in Cyprus for more information on the cuisine!

8. See Europe Square

Another top Larnaca attraction is Europe Square, a central hub featuring some of the city’s earliest 19th-century British colonial architecture. This vibrant square is home to the Seagulls in Flight fountain, the Municipal Art Gallery, and the Larnaca Historic Archives Museum. Throughout the year, Europe Square hosts a variety of events, including the grand Christmas tree lighting, funfairs, and exciting car shows.

9. Tour the Lanes of Lefkara

To truly experience traditional Cypriot life, a visit to the villages around Larnaca is a must. Among them, the charming village of Lefkara, located to the west of Larnaca, offers a wonderful opportunity to explore local culture and heritage.

In Lefkara, you'll encounter historic architecture, traditional cafés, and charming lace shops. Lefkara lace is renowned, partly due to the local legend that Leonardo da Vinci bought a piece to use as an altar cloth in Milan's cathedral in the 15th century.

10. Stop at the Kamares Aqueduct

Built in 1746, the impressive Kamares aqueduct is another unmissable thing to do in Larnaca. Located on the outskirts of town, this historic structure supplied water to Larnaca until the 1930s. It was commissioned by the local Ottoman governor and was part of an intricate water engineering system that used tunnels to deliver water into town.

Today, the 33 arches of the aqueduct rise above lush green fields, offering visitors a striking and picturesque view.
